Obviously I am a current events junky, thus we watch and listen to a lot of news. In an attempt not to be blindly led by any single perspective, in the mornings we watch Fox News for about an hour. In the evenings we try to watch two network national news broadcasts. At night we watch the local news. During the day there is a mix of KOB 770 and Rural Radio in the car. Add in the emails and Facebook (until recently) and I have a pretty broad range in what is going on around me.Read the rest

Along with being time consuming, there is never a dull moment in the governmental arena and the protection of private property rights. We are completing July, which one might think would be a slow time for most, especially those working for government — giving the rest of us a break. Not so much.

We talked at length last month about the devastating news from the New Mexico Court of Appeals declaring the state’s agricultural workers compensation exemption unconstitutional.Read the rest

The Bad News …

Memorials

The state’s workers’ comp exemption has been ruled unconstitutional. In a ruling issued by the New Mexico Court of Appeals on June 22, 2015, all of agriculture is now subject to purchasing workers compensation insurance for its’ workers. In an action that can only be considered as punitive, the ruling is retroactive to March 20, 2012.

One must remember that a memorial in the Legislature doesn’t hold the force of law and doesn’t have to be signed by the Governor. A memorial is a statement of the sentiment of the House and/or the Senate on an issue.… Read the rest

Why Don’t Foodies Like Agriculture?

As home cooking, gourmet dinners and cooking shows come back into vogue; one might expect that food growers — agriculture — would be a pretty popular community. The mere fact that American agriculture feeds and clothes our nation and some of the rest of the world should be grounds for a cozy relationship with anyone and everyone who eats. But we well know that we missed that boat sometime ago.Read the rest

Another One in the Books

The 2015 New Mexico State Legislature is history. Governor Susana Martinez has 20 days from the close of the Legislature, March 21, to sign, veto, or pocket veto the less than 200 bills that made it to her desk.

The Session was unique as they all are. It seemed to take awhile to get rolling but there were enough early morning and late night committee meetings to wear a person out.Read the rest

So much material … so little time

No matter what happens, the New Mexico Legislature always provides a lot of work, food for thought, high blood pressure and entertainment. Back in the olden days one of my favorite things to do was buy a Bill Locater and make fun of the names some bills got. As a disclaimer, it was never my intention to bully the bill drafters and I hope it was never considered as such.Read the rest
