Fall has officially arrived, and at least here in the northern part of New Mexico there is a definite chill in the air which means the first freeze of the season is just around the bend.
Everyone is busy gathering cattle and preparing to ship them off to out of state buyers, feedlots or the nearest sale barn. Prices have fallen substantially from the highs earlier this year due to growing meat supplies but thankfully most everyone received enough rain to grow some good grass, and that translates into heavy, healthy animals.… Read the rest

On August 27th an overflow crowd of at least 200 people gathered in Santa Fe for a State Game Commission meeting. The two agenda items that drew the large crowd were proposed changes to the Bear and Cougar Rules, and an appeal by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) of a decision made by Department of Game and Fish Director Alexa Sandoval to not renew a permit previously issued to the Ladder Ranch. The permit had allowed for the importation and temporary holding of Mexican gray wolves in New Mexico before their release into the state’s forests but there are concerns that the wolves are creating a conflict with the management of the state’s wildlife and the FWS lacks a recovery plan for the wolf.Read the rest

Dear Fellow Members and Industry Supporters,

I’d like to start off where I closed last month’s article. As you’ll recall, we had just learned that the New Mexico Court of Appeals had rendered a decision that the Workers’ Compensation Act which excluded farm and ranch laborers from mandatory coverage was unconstitutional and also allowed claims to be filed retroactively back to 2012 when coverage was not even contemplated under state statute.Read the rest

New Mexico Cattle Grower’s Association President’s Message

Dear Fellow Members & Industry Supporters,

June was a very busy month, from folks branding calves in the rain, during what is normally a dry month, while others were keeping their livestock away from lightning caused wildfires a couple of weeks later; our state legislators passing, and the governor signing, a capital outlay bill which will create much needed jobs in the coming months, many weeks after the regular session ended; the President proposing and Congress voting on a number of bills that would set up long-term trade agreements with Pacific Rim nations without allowing those voting on the legislation to have adequate access to the bill language, and much less the American people who are impacted by these acts of law; and then there was the Supreme Court of the United States, making rulings on cases before them which made them look more like activists than constitutional lawyers.Read the rest

New Mexico Cattle Grower’s Association President’s Message

Dear Fellow Members & Industry Supporters,

What a wonderful spring it’s been with cooler temperatures and frequent precipitation. We’re making a huge dent in the drought impacts we’ve experienced over the past several years and for the first time in a long time are heading into summer with the prospect of abundant forage to produce some heavy and happy cattle.

New Mexico Cattle Grower’s Association President’s Message

Howdy Folks,

During the February Board Meeting in Santa Fe, I was sitting in the West Lobby on the third floor of the Roundhouse, visiting with members, keeping an eye out for one Legislator or another to discuss this bill or that, when Jose asked if I’d write another letter for the Stockman. So here goes…

The other day I was saddling a new young horse to go check heifers…something I’ve done for dang near 50 years and hope I get to do for several more.

New Mexico Cattle Grower’s Association President’s Message

Dear fellow NMCGA members and friends of agriculture

,

At this writing it is four days before Easter. The grass is green and the cattle are working it pretty hard. It’s been a while since we had a winter and spring this wet in our country. The cattle market is good and our product is worth a lot of money. I pray it’s this good for all of you, and if it’s not soon will be.
