J.R. Houghtaling, 92, Artesia, passed away on July 13, 2015. He was born January 29, 1923 on a farm east of Artesia to F.M. and Emma (Vogal) Houghtaling. J.R. farmed, trucked and ranched in Eddy Count for 33 years, sold real estate and bought the Lake Roberts Store before trading his farms for a ranch in Grant County in 1985. The Forest Service cancelled his grazing permits in 1996 after which he retired and moved back to Artesia. He was a member of the first Baptist Church of Artesia and a founding member of the Sapillo Volunteer Fire Department at Lake Roberts.… Read the rest

James ‘Jimmy” Goss, 78, Weed, passed away on July 6, 2015 at his home. He was born on August 18, 1936 in Bear Canyon to Howard Goss and Marion Ehart Goss. Jimmy was a descendant of early pioneers of the 1900s. He lived his whole life in the Sacramento Mountains where he was totally contented and never left the area, but for a few weeks. He was a man not influenced by others ideas or opinions. CL was was born at the Bowe Ranch near Ende on July 19, 1925. He served in the United States Army attaining the rank of Tech Sgt. CL never met a stranger and his quick wit and ready smile were a mainstay for the San Jon Community. She was born on November 21, 1933 to Eldo and Opal (Walker) Lewis and her roots run deep in the Weed and Crowflat areas. Lucy Jane married John Gilbert Schafer on April 28, 1956 in Anapra. Around 1960 they moved to the Lewis family ranch on Crowflat. Lucy Jane was active in the ranching industry. She was a devoted member and officer of the Otero CowBelles, member and board member of New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association, member of Farm Bureau, and a founding member and officer of the Otero County Cattleman’s Association.… Read the rest In Memoriam …William “Bill” Joseph Balzano, 87, Seven Rivers, died on April 3 at his home. He was born October 12, 1927 in Maxwell, New Mexico to Giavanna Benidetto Balzano and Antonio Balzano. Bill was a lifelong farmer and rancher in Maxwell, moving to Carlsbad 12 years ago where he lived with his son Rick Balzano and worked in the family businesses with Dale and Rick until he took ill in March. He served on the Maxwell School Board and the Maxwell Water Board and was known for his fine cattle and farming abilities.… Read the rest In Memoriam …Dee Delk Johnson, 91, passed away at Gila Regional Medical Center on March 9, 2015, after a brief illness. Dee was born to George Delk and Annie Flury Delk at the family ranch near Santa Rita, New Mexico on July 23, 1923. She attended both New Mexico Western State Teachers College and New Mexico A&M (now NMSU) where she was a cheerleader. Dee married her husband Clint Johnson Jr. after his return from WWII and had one daughter.… Read the rest In Memoriam …Wendell Best, 82, Elida, was born January 11, 1933, died February 10, 2015 at his home on the family ranch. He was born in Lamesa, Texas to the home of John Grady (Red) and Eula Faye (Reavis) Best. On December 29, 1952, Wendell married the love of his life, Joy Morgan in Portales. Wendell was a member of the Floyd Baptist Church. Red and Eula Best lived in Bledsoe, Texas, up until Wendell was 9.
